As a company, TierOne values social responsibility, and as such, it encourages its employees to have a generous attitude towards less fortunate people and those afflicted by natural calamities.  Over the years, TierOne has supported and continue to support ongoing charity events, whether they are local, national or international charities, and employees of TierOne are always willing to contribute towards numerous fundraising efforts.

The following are just some of the causes we have been part of:

Breakfast for Kids Program

Established in September 1993, the Peel Community Partners strives to create a loving support network for children and families in the Peel Region.  The Breakfast for Kids Program is one of the Peel Community Partners’ ongoing services, and is geared towards improving child nutrition by providing hearty breakfasts to children who would otherwise start their day with an empty stomach.

TierOne has been a proud sponsor of the Peel Community Partners’ Breakfast for Kids Program since 2002, and has helped provide nutritious meals to underprivileged children in the Mississauga and surrounding areas.

The Dam Youth Drop-in Centre

The Dam Youth Drop-in Centre is a non-profit organization serving teens in Mississauga and nearby areas.  The drop-in centre is so named because its main purpose is to “stop the flow of teens from becoming homeless street kids in downtown Toronto” (www.thedam.org).  The centre accomplishes this by offering a safe and interactive place where youths can come in and get the help they need, regardless of their personal background.

Since 2000, TierOne, as a company, has been a recognized corporate donor to several fundraising initiatives undertaken by The Dam.  To date, TierOne has donated thousands of dollars in support of programs offered by The Dam Youth Drop-in Centre.  In addition, many employees of TierOne and their families are well-respected financial contributors and volunteers at The Dam.  TierOne and its employees are concerned community members with a goal of ensuring that important community organizations such as The Dam have the financial capabilities to provide services that may otherwise be inaccessible to youths in need.

The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in South Africa

The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital is the “only dedicated children’s hospital south of the Sahara” (www.childrenshospitaltrust.org.za).  The hospital treats over 250,000 children from throughout Africa each year.  In keeping with its mission of “providing multi-disciplinary, specialized, and comprehensive pediatric care”, the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital prides itself as a pioneer and standard for excellence in child health and treatment on the African continent.

In November 2005, TierOne was the event sponsor for a talk by former Architel CEO Tony van Marken entitled “The Summit”.  In his presentation, Mr. van Marken recounted his treacherous climbs atop all six summits, culminating to his ascent on top of Mt. Everest.  Many of Mr. van Marken’s former colleagues, most of whom are Bay Street financiers, along with TierOne executives and employees, attended the classy event at the prestigious King Edward Hotel in downtown Toronto.  All proceeds from the event went directly to Mr. van Marken’s charity of choice – the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in South Africa.  In total, TierOne raised over R53,568.64 (equivalent to $10,025.74 CAD, based on a conversion of $1 = 5.35 ZAR) for the hospital and was graciously thanked in writing by the Children’s Hospital Trust.

Toronto Blue Jays Tickets for Kids Program

The Tickets for Kids Program allows corporations to give back to the community by purchasing tickets to several Blue Jays home games.  The Blue Jays organization then matches every ticket to give disadvantaged kids the opportunity to enjoy a day at the ballpark.

In the 2004-2005 season, TierOne purchased tickets for over 20 Blue Jays home games, allowing a number of underprivileged children from various parts of Toronto to watch their baseball heroes play live.  In recognition for its support for the Tickets for Kids Program, TierOne has received positive mention in-stadium as well as in a weekend publication of the Toronto Star.

Top 20 Under Twenty

Top 20 Under Twenty is a national youth awards program founded by Youth In Motion.  It honours young Canadians under the age of 20 who have demonstrated a significant level of achievement, innovation and leadership.

On June 6, 2006, TierOne will take part in honouring the twenty outstanding young Canadians chosen for the Top 20 Under Twenty awards.  As a corporate sponsor of the 2006 Breakfast Celebration Event, TierOne proudly acknowledges the remarkable achievements of the 20 recipients of the award, and hopes to enlighten and encourage other companies to do the same.

Newmarket Ringette Association

The Newmarket Ringette Association oversees the seasonal games of the Newmarket Rays – a team made up of girls aged 5 and up who plays the winter sport of ringette (similar to ice hockey, with slightly different equipments and rules).  The Association draws its players from all interested girls but majority of the team members come from the surrounding regions of York, Simcoe and Durham (http://york.cioc.ca/details.asp?RSN=12501).  It relies on local community sponsors to run the various age groups and train them for tournaments and regional championships.

For the 2004 winter session, TierOne was approached and asked to sponsor a team in the Newmarket Ringette Association.  TierOne gladly accepted the invitation and has since been given recognition as a sponsor in the Association’s website.

YMCA Corporate Team Relay

The YMCA Corporate Team Challenge is the only Canadian exclusive corporate team relay fun run, according to the YMCA website.  The relay raises money for the YMCA Spirit of Giving Campaign, which allows individuals and families to participate in YMCA programs and services they otherwise cannot afford.  In keeping with the YMCA’s objective of providing opportunities for personal growth, community involvement and leadership, the YMCA Corporate Team Challenge is one of the YMCA’s anchor events in the Spirit of Giving Campaign, helping hundreds of thousands of people in the Greater Toronto Area every year.

TierOne has established a long-standing tradition of participating annually at the YMCA Corporate Team Challenge.  A number of employees look forward to making the 5 KM trek at the Exhibition Place each year, and has spawned an increasing interest among other employees to join the running teams.

Daffodil Drive by the Canadian Cancer Society

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the “eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer” (www.cancer.ca).  Every year, between March and April, Canadian Cancer Society volunteers sell and deliver bunches of bright yellow daffodils in support of the fight against cancer.  The daffodil is, according to the organization’s website, Canadian Cancer Society’s symbol of hope.

Within the past three years, TierOne employees have been avid supporters of the Daffodil Days fundraising drive by the Canadian Cancer Society.  Employees place their orders for daffodil bunches to the Mississauga unit of the Canadian Cancer Society and eagerly await the arrival of the flowers to brighten their desks and mark the coming of spring.  Through their contributions, TierOne employees help raise awareness and funds for the Canadian Cancer Society Ontario Chapter.
